At the moment, EasyBuild does not offer support for GCC8.x, however for those who have their own similar installation processes to the default, the following build script and pathfile might be useful. My own contribution to this process is to incorporate the hard and insightful work done by those linked above, with developing an EasyBuild recipe for Python 2.7.x with GCC 8.x. This is kind of important and unsurprisingly, others on in the Python community have noticed it as well both this year, and in a directly related matter from late 2016, with a recommended patchfile provided on the Python-Dev mailing list. If you're not doing SSL/TLS, I don't think you'll have to worry about any of this.An attempted build of Python-2.7.13 with GCC-8.2.0 led to an unexpected error where the build failed to generation of POSIX vars. Issues such as #1 can be solved with updating affected libraries, and for #2, "obviously broken" is probably better than "appears to work but not secure," but these problems are worth being aware of.

Python 2.7.9 includes several significant changes unprecedented in a "bugfix" release: The +++-components listed below are not included in Python(x,y) Update 2.1.4 because of the huge size of this update installer which is very close to the Google Code per-file size limit (100MB). Python 2.7.9 in particular has several potentially breaking changes.
